Technology in Healthcare

Knowing the current and future states of technology in the healthcare industry is important in keeping up with security requirements to safeguard patient privacy.  It is important to answer questions such as, what technology do we see in healthcare? Is it important for employees in healthcare to be digitally literate? And if not, what are the consequences? And finally, what is one of the future trends for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare?

Healthcare records require healthcare workers to enter information on the patient, their health status, and treatments. This information allows them to schedule follow-up and special care appointments. These records also generate billing for care provided. If a healthcare worker does not enter information correctly, this could be very dangerous for the patient. Physicians and nurses need to be computer literate to navigate the many menus that require input.

Imaging and patient-touching devices, such as MRIs, X-rays, radiology reading stations, and cardiac support machines, provide physicians with a clear view of the patient’s condition. Technicians who operate these devices must understand the proper techniques to avoid causing harm. For instance, a radiology technician must know the amount of radiation required to obtain a proper X-ray for each patient. Additionally, technicians responsible for repairing these machines are typically specialized in their operation; if a machine is not assembled correctly, it could pose a serious risk to patient safety.

Artificial intelligence, or AI, is another up-and-coming technology. Modules are being built into healthcare records using patient records that will automatically prescribe medications and treatment based on the information in a chart. Since this is a new technology application, I am certain the output information will need to be reviewed by an attending physician to ensure a patient isn’t prescribed the wrong medicine.

In ten years, healthcare technology will be even more involved. Cybersecurity will be more evolved, including the growth of AI to protect the network that connects the system to not only the local hospital, but also out-of-hospital buildings used for hospital services.

Healthcare needs to stay in line with technology as it is vital for better services for patients.
